Ottawa, room by room
Kanata, Ontario is the far west of Ottawa, and it holds two catering jobs that share a postal town and almost nothing else. North of the Queensway sits the tech park, where a table means a reception desk, a visitor badge and a room booked by somebody in facilities. South and west sit Bridlewood, Katimavik and Kanata Lakes: detached houses with driveways, dining rooms and kitchen islands long enough to carry a full display. Stittsville continues the same run west into newer builds with open-plan kitchens and deep back gardens.
The first question on a Kanata quote is which half of it you are in. A tech-park table is a building problem: access is controlled, the room belongs to a booking system, and the setup window is somebody else’s to grant. A house in Bridlewood or Kanata Lakes is a room problem: the surface, the carry from the driveway and where guests will stand once the table is full. The food can be identical and the plan behind it rarely is.
Offices along March Road, Legget Drive and Terry Fox run on booked rooms and staffed reception. The details that decide whether a build lands calmly are all administrative, and all of them can be settled a week ahead.
Suburban west-end access is the easiest in the city. The vehicle sits a few metres from the front door, the carry is flat, and nothing has to be negotiated with a building. What we ask for instead is the surface: the length of the island, whether the dining table can be cleared and moved against a wall, and whether guests will circulate around the table or approach it from one side. Send a photograph of the room and a tape measurement and the layout is planned before we arrive. In winter, a cleared driveway and a salted front step are the two things that keep a build on schedule.
Stittsville sits at the end of the same run, reached along Hazeldean or in from Carp Road. The housing through Fairwinds, Jackson Trails, Wyldewood and Poole Creek is newer again, which usually means an open kitchen with a long island and a deck or garden behind it. Older Main Street properties are the exception, with narrower rooms and a step or two at the door. Addresses this far west are the ones we check against the radius before quoting, so the travel line on your quote is settled before you book.
The drive from the core runs roughly 25 to 35 minutes outside rush hour and considerably longer westbound after 3 p.m., when the Queensway carries the whole city home in the same direction we are travelling. A 6 p.m. party in Kanata therefore gets an earlier build slot than the same party in the near west end. Anything loading westbound between 3 and 6 p.m. is planned with that extra time already in it.
Two patterns dominate. In the tech park: team lunches, quarterly all-hands gatherings, client visits, retirement send-offs and holiday-season office tables, usually at midday and usually inside a booked hour. In the neighbourhoods: milestone birthdays, graduations, baby and bridal showers, and summer garden parties on the long lots south of the Queensway. Both fit a self-serve styled table, which is the format that survives a room where people arrive across forty minutes.
Delivery and on-site styling are $45 inside the 25 km radius, and Kanata and Stittsville addresses are checked against it when we quote so nothing about the travel line is a surprise. Past 25 km the charge is quoted for your address and appears on the quote before you book. The event minimum is $600 before delivery and taxes.
